COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released "THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB" on dvd. It's
a commendable attempt to tell a story with gay characters in a moving,
compelling way, and break into the mainstream audience. It failed to do so
during its brief theatrical release. In fact, it did pretty abysmally even
in art-houses. Still, that shouldn't discourage viewers from watching this
funny/moving film, especially now that it's loaded with extras as part of its
"special edition" packaging for its dvd release! "THE
BROKEN HEARTS CLUB" is the name of a baseball team headed by actor John
Mahoney. All of the players are gay and brought together by a tendency to
dwell on the pains of their love-life. The cast is excellent, and even
Dean Cain is surprisingly effective here. The film moves skillfully
between drama and comedy, offering great dialogue and decent direction. COLUMBIA
TRISTAR has provided an outstanding transfer here. The correct 2.35:1
aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. The color values are strong,
without oversaturation. Contrast is sharp as well, with deep blacks
and grays. There are no artifacts and fleshtones appear natural
throughout.
The dolby digital 5.1 mix is surprisingly restrained. There are a few
directional effects, but surround use is almost non-existent. The dialogue
is well focused and free of distortion.
Director Greg Berlanti and the film's producer, Mickey Liddell, provide an audio
commentary. Their rapport is extremely engaging and care-free. They
provide some important insight into filmmaking and they're extremely
entertaining.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has also provided a deleted scenes segment! There are
"7" of them included. Each of them is offered with optional
directorial commentary. Some of these scenes are actually
"deleted" scenes. However, some of them are merely intact scenes that
have been "extended". In truth, none of these scenes were
necessary to the film. What's dumbfounding is the fact that the
"extended" scenes point out even more why even their intact footage
should've been cut as well! The director recognizes why the
"deleted" scenes would have dragged the film down, but not that some
of the scenes still intact do as well! There are several theatrical
trailers included, none of them offer 16:9 enhancement.
