THE BRIDE
Considering how big a star Sting was at the time of this film's release, not to mention Jennifer Beals' (unexplainable) appeal, "THE BRIDE" had all the outward signs of becoming a hit. It ultimately bombed! The large numbers who've failed to see it, now have the chance to appreciate "some" of its merits with the great new looking dvd from COLUMBIA TRISTAR. The premise for "The Bride of Frankenstein" films, finding a mate for the lonely monster, is actually worthwhile, no film since Whale's version, has ever pulled off making it play in an entertaining or moving fashion. Whale actually managed to make audiences identify(to a degree) with the monster, as well as the idea of creating life from the dead. Unfortunately, nobody here has created anything resembling "life" on film! Everything plays as two-dimensional! Even the film's opening sequence, featuring the monster kidnapping his bride, and the destruction of Frankenstein's lab, feels strangely non-visceral! The plot follows the monster as he befriends a dwarf, and intermittently returns to Frankenstein and his attempts at saving "The Bride" and making her socially accessible, ala "PYGMALION"! For those expecting a "new" spin on the tale, or at least an intriguing adventure, be ready for disappointment. But, for those who can simply appreciate a fine production design, and minimal character development, one need look no further! COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. The color values are excellent! There's great detail in ever scene, and fleshtones appear natural throughout. The contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays. The flm's original 2.0 soundmix is intact. While the design is limited in terms of effectiveness, due to the technology of its time, this is a fairly aggressive mix. The front soundstage is aggressive with separational effects, and the film's score comes to life throughout the entire speaker setup. Dialogue is intelligible and free of distortion. Director Franc Roddam has provided a running commentary for the film! While the film isn't great, the commentary is! Roddam is extremely candid about the film, and this opportunity to look at the film many years later, allows for him to discuss his misgivings in many areas. He's an intriguing and likeable speaker. We wish that his superior "LORDS OF DISCIPLINE" would come out soon! COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided trailers for other horror films, including "MARY SHELLY'S FRANKENSTEIN", "BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA," and of course, "THE BRIDE".
