While a box-office and critical failure, "THE BOUNTY HUNTER" isn't by any measure, a horrible film, and certainly exponentially better than Gerard Butler's other "comedy," "THE UGLY TRUTH."
Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston star as Milo and Nicole, former ex-husband and wife, whom must now contend with one another as well as various criminals out to derail Milo's attempts to bring Nicole in. Milo's a bounty hunter, and Nicole, a reporter, has jumped bail! Milo is happy (at first)with the idea of handcuffing his ex and bringing her in for any kind of justice. However, it appears the investigative piece she's been working on, surrounding a questionable suicide, has caused bad people who would be damaged by her findings, to seek her demise. It doesn't matter to them if Milo is killed alongside her, and it takes him far too long to recognize this fact for the film's own good.
While "HITCH" wasn't a masterpiece, it had heart to it, and the pacing, while imperfect, was manageable. "THE BOUNTY HUNTER," unfortunately, is all over the place! It takes quite a while to get things going. While deliberate, restrained pacing can work for a film, it only does so when developing strong characters. Neither Milo or Nicole are strong, or really even compelling. They lack any sign of the chemistry that would've ever brought them together previously in marriage, and it's hard to buy there's any smoldering sexuality lurking within the current situation which fate has forced upon them. There are a couple of funny moments, but "THE BOUNTY HUNTER" never makes the decision as to whether it wants to be a comedy, action thriller or combination of the two. Worse, it doesn't do any of these genres extremely well. It's not a bad film. But, it's never very funny or very tense. In the end, "THE BOUNTY HUNTER" leaves the viewer believing a much better film could've been made, had the two main characters been involved with anyone but each other! And, that's a problem!
SONY has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors vary in richness, depending on the given scene. But, generally, they're vibrant and solid. Detail is generally terrific, but there are a surprising number of scenes wherein they appear too soft. It's never as bad as the recent digital noise reduction problems faced on the "PREDATOR" blu-ray remix from FOX, but it's still disappointing, in comparison to the consistently great quality of other SONY blu-ray releases.
SONY has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. In spite of various action/chase scenes, the mix is seldom immersive. Even locations wherein ambient effects should obviously stand out, they're hardly noticeable! Occasional discrete effects pop up, but without any consistency or rationale. The only time wherein the mix is impressive, relates to the great selection of pop music, offering full speaker and bass. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
SONY has included some extras for this release. In addition to various trailers, offered in full 1080p, two digital copies are offered(itunes and PSP). Two featurettes, offered in 1080p, look at the making of the film, with various cast&crew interviews.
