SRP $29.99 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Don Roos has a quirky style to his films that makes them both fascinating and frustrating.  "The Opposite of Sex" had some ingenious dialogue and, for all of its shortcomings, it was still original. The storyline of "BOUNCE" has the potential for numerous cliches, but it manages to avoid most of them.  Ben Affleck plays a top-notch advertising executive, who on his way home to Chicago, gives his ticket to another passenger eager to get home to his wife, so he can hook up with a girl he met at the airport bar.  Later on, when Affleck is with the beautiful(Natassha Henstridge) girl in a hotel room, he sees a news report that the plane he was to have taken, has crashed and everyone on board was killed.

Feeling "responsible" for the death of the guy he gave his ticket to, Affleck turns to drink.  It's bad enough that his work suffers and his partner places him in a rehab.  Upon completion of rehab, he decides to get his life in order and is determined to find the wife of the man he gave his ticket to, intending to help her out with bills, etc.  However, his plan runs into problems as he falls in love with her, unable to tell her that he inadvertently brought about her husband's demise.

BUENA VISTA has presented the film with its correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  The color values are generally subdued, however this is still a slick, well-polished image.  The opening scenes at the airport demonstrate the exquisite detail set to come throughout the film.  The contrast is also quite good, with deep blacks and grays.  Fleshtones appear completely natural throughout.

While the film has a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, there is little in the way of directional effects.  There are a few fine moments utilizing the surround speakers for atmospheric effect, but these are limited.  Typically the surrounds are used just to boost the musical presence.  The LFE track is restrained, but, it too, enhances he music at times.

We were surprised to find BUENA VISTA released "BOUNCE" as a two-dvd set!  There are a lot of supplements here!  Director/writer Don Roos and the producer offer a running commentary on an isolated track.  While it's full of insight into the filmmaking process as well as the scrip development,  Roos' comments just aren't that engaging here.  Maybe he had a bad day, because his previous commentary for "Opposite of Sex" was terrific!  Also, to be fair, the 2nd commentary with Roos, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Affleck is so lively and entertaining that pretty much anything else would pale in comparison.  The "deleted" scenes section is outstanding.  While most deleted scenes present good reason as to why they were cut, these "scenes" are more interesting and captivating because they were edited around "test screening" audiences.  This section "with" or "without" the director/producer commentary really lends insight as to how and why great scenes are sacrificed.  We also get to see two different endings in this section, and one of them is superior to the theatrical version!  However, it was altered due to test audiences failing to comprehend its significance.

There are also two featurettes. One of them explores the film's development in a serious tone.  The other one, "BEN AND GWYNETH GO BEHIND THE SCENES" is comical in its approach.  These are also atypical for featurettes as they each run over twenty minutes!  Add a music video and the theatrical trailer to an already great film and you've got a terrific dvd offering for any collection!
