While FOX hasn’t elected to go back to the earlier seasons of some great series, (eg. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bones, etc.) at least they’re providing some genuinely impressive transfers for more recent seasons. “Bones:Season 6” is now available on blu-ray, and while it opens with all of its main characters scattered all over the world, they regroup quickly.
The love triangle makes things complicated but, by making characters feel forced to come to terms with their repressed feelings, this running back-story feels more believable than having Booth and “Bones” Brennan continuing to struggle alone with their feelings.
As with previous seasons, there are a couple of duds here, but most of the episodes are very entertaining, and the return of the “Gravedigger” along with a former person from Bones’s past, make for some of the best episodes thus far!
While many have likely been turned off by the show’s gross-out effects, this reviewer finds them just so over the top, that it seems to be more of a wink at the audience from the writers as to what’s going to appear ala “Six Feet Under,” than being just exploitative.
The supporting cast is also terrific, and Tamara Taylor as a top pathologist, is just as entrancing as the lead stars. Add the fact that the season ends with a doozy of a finale, certain to make fans eager for Season 7 to come to blu-ray even sooner!
FOX has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray release.
With the transfer from high definition rather than from 35mm, as was the standard in earlier seasons, the image is much more appealing. Colors are richer and striking, without ever feeling unnatural. Detail is outstanding! Of course, the close-ups fare the best, but even in medium and long shots, everything looks great. Contrast is also terrific with inky blacks retaining a surprising amount of detail in the darkest of settings. Whether the scene is in the sterile environment of the lab or at a rugged location, the image rarely falls flat. This is a great looking release!!!
While the DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix provided isn’t particularly aggressive, it’s not bad either. There are some ambient effects and even occasional bass, when a scene really needs it. But, for the most part surrounds are quiet, leaving nuances and separation effects for the front channels. Dialogue is always intelligible and free of distortion.
Some extras are included.
Audio commentaries for two episodes are provided, but of the two, only the one with Boreanaz and Deschanel(The Blackout in the Blizzard), is worth listening to.
A featurette (HD)for the above mentioned, terrific episode is also worth viewing.
Along with a gag reel and a featurette on the show’s special effects, the best extra is the entire pilot(1080p) for “THE KILLING,” a great series which just finished its first season on cable.
