SRP $34.95 1.85:1 DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 SONY

SONY has released the extremely entertaining, comedy, "BLACK DYNAMITE" on blu-ray.  A throwback to the black exploitation films of the '70s, "BLACK DYNAMITE" stars Michael Jai White as "Black Dynamite," the no-hold-barred hero of the black community as well as any community plagued by the oppressive arm of "the man" and drug dealers. After promising his dying mother he'd look out for and protect his brother, his brother still ends up being killed during a drug deal. "Black Dynamite" then starts his mission of revenge, and no one can stop him, not the dealers, not "the man," not his buddy at the C.I.A. or anyone else!

Of course, the deep-rooted conspiracy involving high-power corruption surrounding a malt liquor brand, popular with the inner city consumers, can't be taken seriously, but it doesn't matter. Nothing about this film is intended to be anything but fun. And, like the great, fun films of the black exploitation genre, beautiful girls can't completely satisfy or tire our hero out, either! Even porn actress, Stacy Adams, is thrown into the mix as a sexy nurse who can't keep her hands or anything else from him!  The costumes, film stock, cars, music and everything else from this indie-film make "BLACK DYNAMITE" the atmosphere feel authentic throughout its under 90 minute duration. While some may find its narrative to be a one-joke kind of idea, it's really better than that. One could argue, in hindsight, that even "ENTER THE DRAGON" was only a one-note plot, but that didn't stop it from being a great, entertaining film, either! There's an intentional abundance of politically incorrect dialogue, stereotypes and more, but it's all in the aim of great fun, and that's what "BLACK DYNAMITE" is!

SONY has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray.  Intentionally gritty, the hues and fleshtones are pushed to unnatural extremes, in keeping with the look of the '70s films it seeks to emulate.  Detail is consistently impressive, except for in the darkest moments. Blacks aren't inky, so fine detail tends to be engulfed in shadows during these scenes.

SONY has provided a terrific DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix.  the '70s atmosphere is further brought to life with a rousing soundtrack and great bass effects. While the surround mix isn't aggressive, whenever a rear speaker effect is utilized, it provides great immersive power and the fidelity is really impressive. A great mix!

Extras include an engaging commentary with the director/co-writer Scot Sanders and Michael Jai White and Byron Minns. Featurettes, in 1080p, offer cast and crew interviews, a look at the costume design, music, and more. A comic-con featurette, in 1080i, is pretty amusing, and deleted/alternate scenes(only in standard resolution)are generally entertaining, but it's still upsetting they weren't provided in full 1080p. Traielrs for other upcoming and previous SONY blu-ray titles are provided for in full 1080p.
