BEIJING BICYCLE
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released “BEIJING BICYCLE”, influenced by “BICYCLE THIEF”.
The story follows Guei, a boy from the countryside, whom has moved to Beijing to
find work and hope for a future, as a messenger for one of the city’s elite
bike-messenger companies. At the beginning, the company allows him to keep 20%
commissions until his mountain-bike is paid for, and then 50% thereafter. As
hard as he works, the company keeps fudging the numbers, dashing away his hopes
to get that “prize”, but his good nature and faith persevere. Unfortunately,
the bike gets stolen, and Guei must beat all odds in reclaiming the bike. What
helps make the film so impressive, is its courage to not simplify its
characters. The thief, Jian, is sympathetic at times, and his plight,
evoking memories of the original "Bicycle Thief", is somewhat of a call to arms
for all humanity.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided the film with its correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio and
16:9 enhancement. The image is outstanding. From the opening scenes, the
colorful streets of Beijing come to live with vivid color. Contrast is also
impressive, with deep solids and blacks. The fleshtones appear natural
throughout.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 surround sound is fine, although surrounds are used
sparingly. The front soundstage is fairly active, with directional effects
intermittently throughout the film. The musical score is effectively utilized
at key spots through all speakers.
