SRP$29.95 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY SURROUND COLUMBIA TRISTAR

The Beast-
This dramatic war story was initially released over 12 years ago and has been completely forgotten.  It's a shame because it's extremely provocative and deals with many issues other than "war", and in a manner unaccustomed to most war films.  Screenwriter William Matrosimone adapted the script from his stageplay and Kevin(Fandango)Reynolds directs.
Set during the Russian/Afghan war, the film focuses on a Russian tank company on the run, after its destruction of an Afghan village.  Not only does the tank crew have to fight the external forces, in the form of the Mujahadeen hot on its trail, but also each other, as tensions flare in respect to how their missions are being carried out.  Jason
Patric gives a stirring performance as the tank's driver conflicted between his duty and compassion for the people his tank is destroying.
Unfortunately for him, the commander, played (a little over the top) by George Dzunda, feels no force can be too cruel as he seeks to destroy the rebels and anyone sympathetic to them.  Tensions flare and soon enough Patric ends up helping the other side.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film with its correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  The transfer has incredible detail and while its color scheme is often limited to the browns of the Afghan terrain, there is distinctive color throughout.  Fleshtones appear natural.  Contrast is terrific with deep blacks and grays.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR is presenting "The Beast" with a Dolby 2.0 surround mix.  While the front soundstage offers some effective separation, surround use is extremely limited, which is unfortunate for a film with so much taking place in the periphery of the tank.  One wonders how much more effective certain scenes could have been with a Dolby Digital 5.1 remastering.
The theatrical trailers for "Savior", "Air Force One" and "Blue Thunder" are included.
