SRP $29.99 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL MONO BUENA VISTA

Thankfully, BUENA VISTA has been releasing some excellent foreign films in the past year.  "THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY," "THE CLOSET," to name just two, but "BARAN," should be at the top of any filmlover's list this year, and the dvd is an excellent presentation.

A young Iranian, Lateef, works at a construction site, purchasing and distributing food for the other workers.  When one of the workers is injured on the job, two of the injured man's relatives show up to replace him. One of the two is old, the other, "Baran," is young and overly feminine for a man.  In a short time, Baran ends up taking Lateef's job, and Lateef, having lost his income, wants nothing more than to get even,...until he finds out that Baran is actually a beautiful girl "disguised" as a man.  Lateef falls in love with her, but doesn't know how to cross the cultural bridge before him.

The film deals with many issues of social concerns, and it never succumbs to being melodramatic. It's a powerful and beautiful film.

BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  It's an excellent looking transfer.  The colors are solid, and often vibrant.  Contrast is also quite good, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Monaural mix is in Farsi, with English Subtitles.  It has a decent range in fidelity. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.  The theatrical trailer is included.
