For those who despise the romantic-comedy genre, and films like "BRIDE WARS," "THE BACK-UP PLAN" is something to run from. For those others who can appreciate films can have charm even with complete predictability, "THE BACK-UP PLAN" is a perfect film.
Jennifer Lopez, less annoying than usual, stars as Zoe, a pretty woman, frustrated at not being able to find the right guy. Having decided not to keep waiting while her child-baring clock runs out, Zoe opts for artificial insemination. But,....she runs into "MR. RIGHT" exactly when she finds out that the procedure worked and she's now carrying..."TWINS!" Alex O' Loughlin(THE SHIELD) is extremely likeable as the love interest, Stan. And, unlike most of Lopez's past films, this match on-screen, actually feels natural. But, make no mistake, this is a "girl's" film! Guys will likely be rolling their eyes at each successive predictable scenario about to unfold, while girls will be smiling. There really isn't one surprise that this reviewer can think of, anywhere in "THE BACK-UP PLAN." However, as far as predictable romantic comedies go, it's not bad and there are far worse!
Technically, the film is well made. Music, imagery, and pacing is well structured, making the film far less painful for guys than it could otherwise have been. "THE BACK-UP PLAN" isn't the kind of film that one will be running for to re-watch again and again. But, it's the kind of film one can give for that special girl in their life for Valentine's Day or another occasion, and she'll enjoy it.
SONY has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this AVE MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors are rich and natural throughout! In fact, everything about this presentation feels natural. Detail is outstanding, capturing the grit and warmth of the city in a way seldom as impressive as it is here! "THE BACK-UP PLAN" is, without reservations, one of the best looking transfers of the year!
SONY has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. While not aggressive, it's still more immersive than found on a typical romantic comedy. Music is what's most impressive, with all speakers kicking in and ample LFE. But, ambient effects create the city atmosphere and discrete effects compliment various moments, repeatedly. It's a comfortable, enjoyable lossy presentation.
A so-so featurette, offering behind-the-scenes footage and comments from cast and crew. Deleted scenes(rightfully so)are offered in 1080p, as are additional trailers.
