BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT has released a concert/documentary dvd devoted
to "rap" music, "BACKSTAGE". Filmed during the
1999 "Hard Knock Life" tour, this presentation focuses on hip-hop
stars Jay Z, DMX, Method Man and others. Whether one likes or hates
hip-hop will certainly make the
difference in whether they like or hate the film. But, even if one
likes
hip-hop, it's distressing to see that basically every single performance is
cut short by either an interview or commentary! While even the limited
share of music will undoubtedly please fans, "BACKSTAGE" focuses more
on the "Behind-the-scenes" footage of members getting high, and acting
crazy.
For some reason, BUENA VISTA hasn't offered the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio for
this release. Instead, it's presented in full-frame. The quality of
the release varies in quality, with some portions being really grainy.
Colors are decent, but due to the lighting, the color design is generally
subdued. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is disappointing. Throughout most the film,
music is generally focused in the rear, and interviews coming from the front.
It's surprising for a film focused on music, the music seldom
"engulfs" the listener.
The theatrical trailer is included.
