Alfie-
One of, if not the best film to capture the feel of the '60s in London, is
the film "ALFIE". Michael Caine stars as a British ladies man in
this
comedy, swinging "for real" as Austin Powers aspired to be in his
films.
When Alfie moves from one sexual conquest to another for anyone but himself, but
also about the emptiness the women feel. Based on a play, the film
adaptation still allows for a sense of audience participation as Caine often
speaks to the camera. This process also allows for the viewer to further
see how "ALFIE" tries to justify his actions, pleading his case and
reasoning to us.
While the film feels extremely realistic and gritty, it does offer some
shred of hope in its conclusion. However, because the film is so
innovative and "authentic", the conclusion is the kind of ending
viewers "want" and are pleased with.
PARAMOUNT has provided a wonderful looking and sounding dvd. The image is
intentionally grainy at times, providing that "gritty" atmosphere.
The contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays. PARAMOUNT has
provided 16:9 enhancement, and it provides even greater detail than on the
previously available laserdisc. While the English accents are difficult to
understand at times, the dialogue is clear and free of distortion. One
exception, however, is the Cher song playing over the end credits. It's in
bad shape, and hard to discern for some reason.
