A good story can be told many times and still entertain, "if" it's well executed. "Cinderella" has always been a tale targeted for girls, and while the original animated classic still had entertainment value for both genders, there's no mistaking who favored it most!

With that in mind, the latest take on "CINDERELLA," is "A CINDERELLA STORY: ONCE UPON A SONG" and it unapologetically is meant "just for young girls." It's hard to imagine a dad or any young male not cringing throughout most of the syrupy tale. Lucy Hale(Pretty Little Liars) stars as Katie, a sweet young girl aspiring to be a singing artist. Unfortunately, her mean stepmother and stepsister continually squash her dreams. Falling head over heels for Luke, the new heart-throb at her performing arts school, Katie does her best to win him over with her voice and charm, but, the evil stepmother forces Lucy to provide the voice for her own daughter, via lip-synching, and tricks Luke into falling for the wrong, untalented girl, or does he???

For a film filled with music, it's surprising to find that none of the voices used are that impressive. Still, the songs are actually semi-memorable in a light-pop kind of way, and the film's atmosphere is light and breezy enough to make young girls(7-14)enjoy this one over many repeated viewings!

WARNER BROS. has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this 16:9 enhanced dvd. Colors are solid and often vibrant, especially during the musical sequences. No obvious artifacts pop up and contrast is surprisingly better than on most recent dvds we've reviewed, retaining an impressive amount of detail in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.

WARNER BROS. has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix.  While it's not an aggressive environment, ambient effects add a polished feel and open up the atmosphere in a pleasing way. Separation effects are plentiful with focus towards the front soundstage. However, the songs are rendered with great dynamic range through all speakers. It's an impressive mix, especially when considering it's standard dolby digital 5.1 and not a lossy mix. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

WARNER BROS has included a music video, behind-the-scenes footage and other featurettes, certain to please fans of the film!
