Director Jonathan Kaplan deserves credit for taking risks, "THE ACCUSED", even with some faults, is one of the few films dealing with rape in an honest manner, far more than crap like "THELMA AND  LOUISE".   Based closely on a true story, Jodie Foster won an Oscar for her performance as a woman whom has been gang raped, and then "metaphorically" raped again by the judicial system.  Kelly McGillis also gives a great performance as a DA whom is at first willing to write Foster's claim off due to her sordid past, but then champions for her, taking on the system in a creative and powerful way.

This isn't an easy or pleasant film to watch. The rape scene is graphic, intense, and intentionally shocking.  It's also often depressing.  But, there is a powerful message unfolding during the film, and this story of  redemption and human dignity deserves to be seen.

PARAMOUNT has released the film with its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and 16:9 enhancement.  The image is flawless!  Colors are vibrant and never appear oversaturated.  There is great depth and clarity in every scene. Contrast is perfect with deep blacks and grays, especially in the crucial difficultly lit bar scene. There is no grain anywhere. A great image.

PARAMOUNT has remastered the film with Dolby Digital 5.1.  The surround and directional effects are restrained for most of the film, with the exception of the score, which is powerfully complimented throughout all speakers.  During a few key scenes, the surrounds do come to life creatively, and there's even some fine LFE moments.

The theatrical trailer is presented in 1.85:1 with 16:9 enhancement and 2.0 sound.
