It's hard to choose the best PIXAR film. "CARS" is arguably the only really bad
one. However, there are plenty of those who criticize "A BUG'S LIFE." So,
reviewing it again for this blu-ray release, it was easy to wonder if it would
hold up a decade later. It does! A googy, well-meaning ant,Flik, trying to win
respect from his village, volunteers to put together a tough gang to fight the
greedy grasshoppers who've been exacting a hefty regular tribute. The group he's
assembled are diverse, bizarre and funny. Only after Flik returns home to show
off the success of his roundup, does he find out that his new gang are just
circus performers! Trying to keep this a secret and still use their skills to
beat the grasshoppers, is the focus of the majority of the film. While it's
extremely funny, it's also very clever, capturing the wonderful blend of
wholesome entertainment and wit that PIXAR is known for.
The
voice talent is perfect and while the animation isn't as advanced as the newest
PIXAR films, "A BUG'S LIFE" still looks beautiful on this blu-ray release!
Colors are bright and vivid, and detail is flawless! "A BUG'S LIFE" is without a
doubt, one of the best looking blu-ray releases available! The image has
incredible depth in virtually every scene, and there isn't one instance of
artifacts or other flaws. A GREAT LOOKING, REFERENCE QUALITY BLU-RAY!
The
original 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact in this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray
presentation.
BUENA
VISTA has also provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. WOW! Again, the lossy
mix stands out far and above the majority of blu-ray mixes already available! As
much as we'd enjoyed the dolby digital mix on the dvd, this new DTS-HD mix blows
it away! This is a surprisingly aggressive mix, with surrounds, LFE and panning
effects consistently used in creative, exhilarating ways. The score is also
fantastic, creating so much more to the film's magical atmosphere than many
animated film scores have managed to do lately(with the exception of "Wall-E,"
of course!) The dynamic range is wonderful and dialogue is always perfectly
balanced with the wide spectrum of effects. REFERENCE QUALITY, INDEED!!!
All of
the great extras found on the older collector's dvd version have been carried
over, including the great commentary, design galleries and featurettes. However,
several of the featurettes, as well as the deleted scenes, outtakes, filmmaker's
roundtable and more, are now presented in HD!!!
